Coffeeholics, people who consume no less than 4 cups of Joe every day, are less likely to die from oral cancer by nearly as half.
This is according to a study conducted by the American Cancer Society. Janet Hildebrand, an epidemiologist affiliated with the American Cancer Society reports that the study was able to analyse the coffee drinking habits nearly 1 million people.
The study reports that people who were observed to regularly drink at least 4 cups of caffeinated coffee every day incurred half the risk of dying from oral cancer compared to non or occasional coffee drinkers. The finding remained true even after the researchers took into account the smoking habits and alcohol consumption of the participants.
Having started in 1982, the study which was overseen by the American Cancer Society was on a mission to analyse the link between coffee and cancer in over 968,000 men and women. It is important to note that when the study began, all of the participants were recorded to be free of cancer.
26 years after, a total of 868 oral and throat can deaths were recorded.
The study had 97% of the participants drinking either coffee or tea. Out of this number, more than 60% drink at least one cup of coffee every day, with most participants drinking 3 cups every day. The approximated reduction risks were strikingly similar in people who drink 2, 3, 4, or 5 cups every day.
How Coffee Protects
Lead researcher Janet Hildebrand reports that until now the study wasn’t able to find the specific mechanism that allows coffee to decrease the risk of oral cancer. If there is anything certain, it is that coffee literally contains hundreds of active compounds that have potent anti-cancer properties.
Hildebrand notes that the positive conclusion of the study isn’t to say that people should start drinking coffee as a proactive means of cancer prevention. If such recommendation were to be formalized, then a much conclusive epidemiological, scientific, and clinical evidence is needed.
