Dental crowns and bridges are restorative prosthetic devices used to replace damaged or missing teeth and return your smile to its former glory. They are available in a range of types and styles and are custom-made according to patient requirements.
Commonly known as ‘caps’, a dental crown or cap is a type of tooth restoration that completely encapsulates the surface of the affected tooth. It not only helps to restore the strength and durability of your tooth but also restores the appearance of the tooth, matching the original natural size and shape. We generally recommend crowns for cracked, badly broken or root canal treated teeth.
At CBD Dental Ballarat, we can prepare and fit all kinds of crowns and dental bridges.
What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown or tooth crown is a custom-made cap that is fitted over a damaged tooth. These caps are usually made of porcelain or ceramic and custom shaped and coloured to seamlessly fit in with your other teeth. Crowns are used to treat decayed, broken, chipped or brittle teeth. Besides improving the aesthetics of a damaged tooth, dental crowns can protect, restore and improve the strength and durability of a weakened tooth.
Crowns are fitted on top of the existing tooth. The damaged or weakened tooth is usually filed down and any decay removed. A support structure is then fitted over the tooth, with the crown fitted over the structure.
Crowns usually require two to three sessions to complete, although complex or multiple crowns may take longer.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a custom-made restoration option designed to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges generally consist of one or more false porcelain teeth fitted to a metal crown structure. The crowns are fitted to the healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth and cemented into position. Once fitted, the bridge teeth look, feel and work just like natural teeth.
Consultation Process
The entire tooth crown or bridge process usually takes two to three visits to the clinic. During your first visit, your teeth are examined and the best treatment plan is worked out. Your teeth will then be prepared and accurate impressions and images of your teeth will be taken. These will then be sent to our dental lab so the crown or bridge can be prepared. This process may take up to two sessions.
Once the crowns or bridges are back from the lab, we can then fit them to your teeth. Once fitted, we will provide complete care instructions and schedule a follow up appointment to ensure there are no problems.
