Wisdom Teeth Removal - Ballarat

Wisdom teeth removal can be a major dental procedure. So, if you’re having trouble with your wisdom teeth, you need an experienced dentist you can trust. At CBD Dental Ballarat, we have extensive experience treating all problems related to wisdom teeth.

Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Problems with wisdom teeth are common. Wisdom teeth are also known as third molar teeth. They typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. When a tooth is unable to fully enter the mouth, it is said to be impacted, with the majority of people having at least one impacted wisdom tooth.

It is best to have wisdom teeth removed at a younger age, as the bone around teeth is not as dense and it is safer for the adjoining nerve, bone and teeth. Even if your wisdom teeth aren’t causing problems, the lack of space in the back of the mouth can make their emergence very painful. Wisdom teeth can cause decay in the adjacent teeth and can also cause infection and inflammation. If you are experiencing any of these issues or want to know more about your wisdom teeth, please contact our team today.

The Removal Process

Wisdom teeth are removed under anesthetic. Whether it’s for a single tooth or all four wisdom teeth, you will feel nothing during the extraction process. Generally, the teeth are simply extracted from the jaw. However, in some cases, some bone may also need to be removed from the jaw. Generally the process only takes around an hour and can be carried out from our clinic.

After the surgery, once the anesthetic wears off, you will be groggy and will likely feel some pain and discomfort for a day or two. You will need someone to pick you up and take you home. We will provide a complete after-care process to help manage the pain and ensure the wounds heal cleanly and quickly.

Impaction

When wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to emerge properly, they can become trapped under the gum line. This condition can lead to pericoronitis (inflammation of the gum tissue around the tooth) or dental abscesses, which may require immediate treatment.

Infection

Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to infection and pain. Their location can make proper oral hygiene difficult, increasing the risk of bacteria build-up, which can lead to gum disease and other oral health issues.

Damage to Adjacent Teeth

Wisdom teeth can push against nearby teeth, causing misalignment or damage. This can lead to orthodontic issues requiring additional treatment, such as correcting braces.

Cysts or Tumors

In rare cases, impacted wisdom teeth can develop cysts, adversely affecting the jawbone and surrounding teeth. If left untreated, these cysts can lead to bone loss and other serious complications.
